Definition

This design draws inspiration from the Māori phrase "Mai ngā maunga titia e", meaning "the mountains that pierce the sky", a powerful line from the Haka. It celebrates the sacred connection between the land, its towering peaks, and the stories that shape them.

The graphics illustrate the journey of Mount Taranaki, whose legendary retreat westward carved the Whanganui River. This tale reflects the dynamic forces shaping Aotearoa (Māori for New Zealand), blending myth with geology.

Merging myth and geology, this piece honours the enduring spirit of the mountains and the land they shape — a tribute to the beauty and power of New Zealand’s living landscape.
